Having a trademark allows its owner to be out there in the market, whether it is through a product or service or the advertising on different means of communication. Nowadays, the alternatives to make people know you, multiply by second.
There are entrepreneurs that look for success not only in their own countries. They look to expand, to neighboring countries, a region or worldwide. This, of course, represents higher costs but the business’ position will improve in many ways.
In these cases, the trademark owner must contact a trademark attorney to start the process in each country. There are some specific regions that will accept a trademark filed in one country for the rest. As always, an antecedent search must be performed in each country, in order to avoid future problems once you are settled. This is why we suggest having a “main trademark” to exploit to the full, and “additional trademarks” to back it up.
It is very important to study the market you want to establish in, since the same product may be a success in one country and a total failure in another. You have to take into account the business’ needs and habits.
